Fort Building

Fort Building
Fort building is one of those creative play activities that can be done from ages 2 (with lots of help!) up to the teen years.

When my sons were little adventurers, they delighted in creating enchanted forts - whether at school, in our backyard, or right in the heart of our home. I discovered that having supplies neatly tucked away nearby sparked their imaginations, leading to frequent building sprees. Our living room often transformed into a fantastical construction zone, where sofa cushions became sturdy walls, kitchen chairs turned into towering turrets, and every sheet and blanket was draped like the finest silken canopies. Soon, the entire space beneath became a secret hideaway, where they and the neighborhood children would crawl in, bringing along their favorite toys and books, ready to embark on the grandest of adventures.

Our Playclips are small and easy for children to use to build their own magical fort! They will clip and securely hold Playsilks, blankets, and sheets onto tables, chairs and sofas.
Our new Playforts are the newest addition to our fort building collection. We've heard from parents and teachers how much they love how lightweight and easy the Playfort set is to build and take apart - each Playfort set comes in its own canvas bag for easy storage! See how our friend Liz and her little ones put together and decorated their Playfort here.

Secret play forts are magical places where childhood memories are made. Being given the autonomy to help create their own play space is incredibly meaningful for children - and with simple fort building tools like Playsilks and Playclips, it's easy for them to bring their dream play space to life!

I hope you'll share some ideas of how your children build forts in the comments below. We will randomly choose one winner that will receive a Playfort Kit of your choice on 8/19.

Everyone who enters will also receive a coupon code for 30% of Playforts on 8/19 through email.

We love seeing the many ways our community uses Playsilks to make their own beautiful forts!
Indoors and outdoors, big and small, here are a few examples to inspire your next fort building adventure:

  • We love to make forts on armchairs with cushions and a blanket

  • My 2 biggest have started building forts for their new baby sister. It’s the sweetest thing to see all 3 of them laughing underneath a blanket. It’s the small moments like that, when all that’s required are siblings and a blanket, that makes my mama heart fill with love.

  • Adrian loves to build house, no matter whether using Lego / wooden blocks / magnetic tiles. Definitely nothing the aforesaid could be fun as using playfort to build his own house as this playfort house is big enough for Adrian to go inside, and what’s more? we can also bring the playfort out to the park / countryside to play with the playfort.

  • My kids love using their Sarah’s Silks to build playforts in their play den outside in the garden, or inside with the dining table and chairs, their playstand or their play sofa. It keeps them busy for days on end as they always ask us not to take it down. The Sarah’s Silks playfort would be amazing for them as they could build something higher that they can stand in, it would be perfect in the playroom or in the garden or even the park, the woods or the beach, I love how compact it is so it’s easy to take out on adventures. I can just imagine the fun they would have when their friends come over to play.

  • My baby has always loved turning our duvet into a den before bed. She also uses the silk from her teether to hide under and just started using it for as a den for her toys

  • We make a “pirate ship” from blankets & duvet covers & sleeping bags (&bedroom furniture) & look at the stars -before making our cuddly toys walk the plank! All while holding our trusty Sarah’s silks swords! Love where her imagination takes her-I just tag along for the ride!❤️

  • In our house, currently at bedtime, I’m the tent pole and the duvet is the fort. Little one loves to lie on her back and look up at the ‘stars’ as the light comes through the sheets – she always looks so content 🥰

  • My daughter loves dragging her soft play slide or a table to the sofa and covering it with a blanket! She calls it a dent which I think is a hybrid of tent and den 😂

  • Our dining room chairs spend more time as a den/fort than they do being used for dining! Perhaps a play fort kit would relieve them!

  • My daughter loves to build forts in the couch 😄
