Fort Building

Fort Building
Fort building is one of those creative play activities that can be done from ages 2 (with lots of help!) up to the teen years.

When my sons were little adventurers, they delighted in creating enchanted forts - whether at school, in our backyard, or right in the heart of our home. I discovered that having supplies neatly tucked away nearby sparked their imaginations, leading to frequent building sprees. Our living room often transformed into a fantastical construction zone, where sofa cushions became sturdy walls, kitchen chairs turned into towering turrets, and every sheet and blanket was draped like the finest silken canopies. Soon, the entire space beneath became a secret hideaway, where they and the neighborhood children would crawl in, bringing along their favorite toys and books, ready to embark on the grandest of adventures.

Our Playclips are small and easy for children to use to build their own magical fort! They will clip and securely hold Playsilks, blankets, and sheets onto tables, chairs and sofas.
Our new Playforts are the newest addition to our fort building collection. We've heard from parents and teachers how much they love how lightweight and easy the Playfort set is to build and take apart - each Playfort set comes in its own canvas bag for easy storage! See how our friend Liz and her little ones put together and decorated their Playfort here.

Secret play forts are magical places where childhood memories are made. Being given the autonomy to help create their own play space is incredibly meaningful for children - and with simple fort building tools like Playsilks and Playclips, it's easy for them to bring their dream play space to life!

I hope you'll share some ideas of how your children build forts in the comments below. We will randomly choose one winner that will receive a Playfort Kit of your choice on 8/19, closed! Melissa Alfred you won!

  • My kids love using blankets and couch cushions to make forts. Just this week they went down to the basement to build forts and play a game in an imaginary world they created. I love seeing them play together!

  • My kids love to make forts using Sarah silks, clips and bed sheets across our balcony. It becomes their little oasis outside in the sun :)

  • Our current forts are made from blankets and furniture, however we love using our current regular sized and mini play silks as windows to let light in! We haven’t been able to get a fort sized silk yet but can’t wait for the day that we do!

  • I have five kids varying ages up to 12. Fort building is so magical for different reasons with all the ages. My oldest loves to create a space to play with her siblings. My youngest loves to live in her imagination and create almost anything. My kids also use forts as a place to recharge when life gets overwhelming and then need a quiet place to calm down. We have four kids who are on the spectrum so having those options for a quiet place is important.

  • I asked my daughted how she liked to build forts and she said like this and held her hands up to be a roof 💕

  • We just started collecting play silks and my kids have been using the nugget couch to build their forts. What a magical world they can create! They’ve used their imagination to create a restaurant, a beach cabana, fairy houses! Thank you for the opportunity to enter.

  • My kids will use our tall stools to have two story forts!

  • We are a little young for fort building here, but peek a book is a lot of fun in a variety of ways. Like hiding under the sheets while mama makes the bed. Looking forward to fun days of fort building with my growing toddler!

  • My little toddler gathers all of the pillows in the house into a pile and then crawls underneath them. We’ve tried building pillow structures but she always dives into them. She’d love a little fort that she can hide away with her books and stuffed animals.

  • My children have always loved building forts! They use couches, sticks, blankets, books, toys… it seems their imagination is endless. One of my favorite forts they built was in the middle of the woods with sticks, mud and leaves! They were not prompted nor instructed, it was all on their own inspiration and imagination. It is so fascinating to see how creative children can be, I love it!

  • My daughter loves to pretend she’s at a campout. We use our nugget, couch cushions and blankets to create an entire play area.

  • My kids use their Pikler triangle set and cover it with numerous silks to construct forts and animal homes. Their favorite right now is playing ant colony with “rooms” for food, nursery, and the queen of course. They also love to us their play silks and clips along our railings to put on their own magical puppet shows.
